HISTORY

 

The Congregation of the Carmelite Religious (C.C.R.) was founded by Mother Mary Theresa Veronica in 1868 at Bayonne, France. As Carmelites, we seek to enkindle the fire of Divine LOVE in the hearts of men and women by promoting the values of the Kingdom in society. The Carmelite Sisters run educational institutions of all levels in India and abroad. All Saints' College is one such institution.

The College was founded in 1964 by the late Rev. Mother Mary Louise with the approbation of His Excellency, the late Rt. Rev Dr. VV. Dereere, O.C.D., Bishop of Trivandrum.

The College was opened in the Holy Angels' Convent premises on July 6,1964 with the late Miss Margaret R Paulose M.A., L.T. as the first Principal of the institution and 277 students in the first year of the Pre-Degree Class. The present strength of the College is about 2000 after the delinking of the Pre Degree Course. Being a Catholic College for Women, its purpose is to give to students of all creeds a liberal education, to train them in the service of God and Human being and Country and in such other things in harmony with that purpose.

On May 15,1965 His Excellency, the late Most Rev. James R. Knox, Apostolic lnternuncio to the Republic of India, laid the foundation stone of the first block of the College at Chackai, the permanent campus. The College was shifted to the new premises at Chackai on the January 19,1967.

On July 24,1967, the College was upgraded by starting Degree Courses in the following main subjects: English, History, Economics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Zoology. Two Degree Courses, Botany and B.Com were started in July 1980 and Physics in 1993.

Post Graduate course in English Language and Literature was introduced in 1982, and in 1990, the Department of English was recognized as a Research Centre of the University of Kerala. Post Graduation in Commerce and Environmental Science were made available from 1995 and 2000 respectively.

Ms.Margaret P.Paulose, the first Principal of the College retired on 24 September, 1969. Sr.Mary Amata was the Principal from 25 September, 1969 to 8 October, 1972, and Dr.Sr.Mary Alice from October 1972 to March 1987. Sr.Mary Frances who took over on April 1987, was elected Rev.Mother General on 15 May, 1996. Sr.Mary Laurentia took charge as Principal in June 1996. On her retirement in March 2000, Rev.Mother Mary Frances resumed charge as the head of the institution. On the retirement of Mother M.Frances in March 2002, Dr.Esther Jayanthi, took over the charge. She has been succeeded by Dr.Mabil P.S, who took over the mantle in April 2007
